Extraordinary matching 3' crotches - just beautiful pattern and chatoyance.
Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly in Tiger Maple and Ebony
The underside of this piece echoes Nakashima’s butterfly keyway style, holding the cherry crotch in check. Just as my craftsmanship has ‘metamorphosed’ since the ‘70s, so too have these solid 2” hand carved ‘Butterflies’. This natural progression of my form still retains its original function.
Transitioning from the trees live edge to our handiwork.
Carving a third dimension into the crotches, like faceting a diamond, makes the chatoyance sparkle!
While beautiful, and slightly whimsical, it was the trees rotten heart and loose stumps that necessitated carving both ends.
Placing this piece to capture the sunlight will bring out its vibrancy and allow the wood to patina to its naturally deep and beautiful tones.
Interesting remains of the root system and stump are preserved.
For Sale - Slab table in the early stages. If you desire we can customize to your tastes or needs and give you a truly personalized piece.
Alex's 42 Drawer Tool Chest
Even a tool chest should have elegant form.
Function always leads form, from my viewpoint.
Armoire, wardrobe, coat closet, call it what you will. Mostly this was an exercise and experiment in using color to achieve the most out of plain white pine.
